Last month, after many delays, Apple finally announced the Vision Pro headset and said it would launch early next year. During this time, Apple’s manufacturing partners were supposed to improve the Vision Pro’s performance and fix other problems.
Now the Financial Times is reporting that apparently things aren’t going according to plan, and that Apple’s initial goal of selling 1 million Vision Pro devices in its first month has been reduced. Luxshare, as the assembler of this headset, is now looking to produce less than 400,000 units in 2024, according to two insider sources. Also, the other two suppliers of the headset parts have only received orders for 13,000 to 15,000 units for next year.
The Vision Pro’s expensive components seem to be causing problems, and its micro OLED displays, which are made by Sony and TSMC, have poor performance. Apple apparently intended to use other displays such as mini-LED in its mixed reality headset, but ultimately decided to use micro-OLED. Now Cupertino is negotiating with Samsung and LG to use their screens in the cheaper version of Widget Pro.
The Vision Pro design is very sophisticated and has unique features such as EyeSight, which includes additional views that are visible to others. These features, along with the advanced technology of high-resolution micro-OLED displays, have inevitably created problems for Apple, which is why the launch of this headset is scheduled for several months after its introduction.
In any case, we have to wait and see when this headset will finally reach customers.
