An Italian startup called Captery claims to have developed AA- and AAA-sized batteries that charge in less than three minutes and can last for decades. This product, which is called Kaptri Ultra, uses supercapacitor technology unlike the common lithium or nickel-metal hydride batteries.
According to the inventions department of Tekna Technology News Media, the design of this battery is based on the physical storage of energy, not chemical processes. This approach allows supercapacitors to charge very quickly and wear out much less over time. The company says these cells have nearly infinite charge and discharge cycles and can be charged up to 500 times faster than a normal rechargeable cell.
The company also emphasizes the environmental benefits of its product. It is said that the materials used in the construction of these cells are about ninety percent more stable than conventional options. This innovation is a response to a major environmental problem as billions of batteries end up in landfills every year, creating thousands of tons of toxic waste.
Captri Ultra battery provides 3.2V voltage. This amount of energy is enough for most consumer electronic devices that usually rely on two 1.5 volt batteries. These devices include toy remote controls and wireless keyboards, and this battery can be used in most devices that require two or more battery cells.
Users must use a special device called S-Charge Plus to charge these batteries. Conventional lithium or NiMH chargers can damage these supercapacitor cells. Captery’s special charger is capable of charging both AA and AAA models, and an adapter allows the use of smaller formats.
The company also offers an accessory called the Captree Bridge. This tool allows users to combine new cells with older batteries to extend their useful life and maintain power balance. This startup also plans to produce a 1.5 volt version compatible with single battery devices if it collects enough funds.
The project is currently crowdfunding on the Kickstarter platform And it has been well received. With 26 days to go, this campaign managed to surpass its goal of $6,524 and reach more than $8,400. There are different levels of support for this project.
The standard Ultra Kit package is priced at €54 or around $63 with free worldwide shipping. The package includes an S-Charge Plus charger, a Capt. AA battery, a AAA battery, as well as connecting bridges for both battery sizes, with the option to add more.
Supporting crowdfunding projects, of course, comes with inherent risks. Sponsors should be aware that such campaigns may experience delays in changes to product specifications or even non-delivery. Therefore, a detailed assessment of project details is necessary before any participation.
