Finally, with the end of the 7-year mission of the Osiris Rex probe on Sunday, this probe was able to successfully bring the samples related to the Bennu asteroid to the ground.
According to Tekna technology news service, with the end of the Osiris Rex probe mission, the capsule containing Bennu asteroid samples finally landed in the Utah desert. Since this event, recovery teams have landed and examined the capsule. Previously, NASA’s spacecraft was able to provide scientists with samples of pristine space rocks by launching a capsule into the Earth’s atmosphere. Thus, the mission of one of the most important NASA probes ended after 7 years. The $1 billion Osiris Rex spacecraft was launched in 2016 with the help of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. In the mission related to this probe, the potentially dangerous asteroid called Bennu was supposed to be investigated. The purpose of sending this probe was also to prepare a shipment of rocks from this asteroid.
In 2018, this probe broke the record of orbiting the smallest object and studied Benno for 22 months. The landing of Osiris Rex happened on the surface of Bennu in October 2020, and finally this probe was able to pick up a cargo containing soil and pebbles weighing about 250 grams from the asteroid. In any case, the team of this mission should open the capsule holding the materials and examine the collected samples.
