What is nose piercing? Since when and for what purpose has it been done? Who is not a suitable option for this job? What care should be taken before and after nose piercing? If you are going to get your nose pierced, you better know everything about it. Stay with us in “Menomad”.

Nose piercing is one of the most popular types of piercing. Especially young people and teenagers are interested in piercing different parts of the body including ears and nose, using ornaments in these areas and attracting more attention. In this article, we try to share the most important information in this field with you.

What is nose piercing?

Nose piercing is a procedure in which the lobe, septum or the soft part of the lower septum and upper lip are pierced and special ornaments are placed in it.

Nose piercing is very popular just like ear piercing. In this process, with the help of an expert, you can pierce the nose blades, septum or cartilaginous wall in the middle of the nose or the soft tissue under the septum and decorate it with special ornaments.

The nose is the most prominent part of your face and plays an important role in determining the character of your face. Therefore, it is not surprising that from about 4,000 years ago until today, humans have tried to share different cultural messages with others by piercing and decorating their noses, or in this way, to attract the attention of the people around them to their faces. In recent years, nose piercing has become a widespread trend in modern societies and has attracted the attention of a large number of people, especially young people.

What is the history of nose piercing?

What is the history of nose piercing?
Piercing the nose and using precious jewelry to decorate this part of the face has been common since about four thousand years ago in parts of the Middle East, Africa, India and Australia. / Photo by: Subir-Basak

Nose piercing is more than 4,000 years old and started with the Bedouin tribes of the Middle East, Berber tribes and some groups in Africa. It is interesting to know, even in the Holy Bible, nose piercing is mentioned. In this way, it turns out that doing this work continued for 2 thousand years after the first evidence was seen. In ancient times, the men of the Bedouin tribes gave valuable jewelry to their future wife to make her happy. Nose jewelry was one of the most common gifts given to women as an initial capital or a form of insurance. The size and financial value of these rings was directly related to the wealth of the man and his family. At that time, women could sell their nose ring in case of their husband’s death and support themselves and their children for a while.

In a number of other tribes, nose ornaments were considered part of the dowry of lucky girls, and the girls’ families gave them this gift as a financial support. The warriors of the tribes used to pierce the septum of their noses and decorate them with strange and handmade ornaments in order to make their faces look more frightening. Some of them would pull the cartilaginous blade of their nose until it was completely enlarged. Therefore, they could gradually insert a piece of ivory, bone or pieces of wood into the hole in the septum. Historically, there were several reasons for piercing the septum. This act was usually done in order to increase beauty, show devotion to a certain religion and profession, or mark milestones in life. For example, in some tribal cultures, as soon as a boy reaches the age of adolescence and so-called manhood, he pierces his nasal septum during a ceremony.

The natives of Australia used to pierce their noses just to beautify their appearance. In the 16th century, the Mongols invaded India. Upon their arrival in this region, the people of India became familiar with the phenomenon of nose piercing. In parts of India and Asia, nose piercing was reserved for girls who reached marriageable age and were ready to start a family. These people usually pierced the left side of their nose as a sign of the health of all body organs. At that time, it was widely believed that piercing the left side of the nose would help increase women’s fertility. In addition, the followers of the ancient schools believed that piercing the septum would focus brain waves and improve the sixth sense. These days, nose piercing has many fans in the western civilization and it is usually done to make the face more beautiful and to make it look more attractive.

When did nose piercing become a trend?

When did nose piercing become a trend?
The expansion of Westerners to India and various regions of Asia and Africa drew the attention of many of them to nose piercing and its cultural meaning. Photo by: Viktoriia-Hnatiuk

For the first time in 1913, the use of ornaments and nose rings was introduced to Western civilization. At this time, a French singer named Polaire pierced the left side of his nose while on tour in the United States, attracting the attention of a wide range of young people at the time. However, it took years for the practice to become more widely popular. In the 60s, a large number of American hippies who traveled to India pierced their noses to imitate the people of this country. In the 70s and 80s, punks and goths used this work as a symbol of rebellion against the conservative values of society and to declare their physical independence. This trend continued until rings and nose ornaments became one of the most popular accessories in America and Europe.

In some primitive cultures and civilizations, nose piercing is still done with the help of sharp tools or thin and strong branches of some plants. But in modern societies, this can be done using a sterile needle or syringe in just a few minutes. The steps of nose piercing are as follows:

Preparation

First, the person who performs the piercing must carefully clean and sterilize the outer surface of your nose.

Marking

Then, the place intended for piercing should be marked as a point.

piercing

At this stage, the nose, septum, or the softness under the septum of the nose is pierced with the help of a sterile needle or syringe, and the desired ornaments are placed in this hole. For health reasons, the use of special piercing guns is not recommended.

cleaning

After completing the piercing process, the newly pierced area must be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized again.

Important points about nose piercing

Important points about nose piercing

  • The person who is going to pierce your nose should first of all ask questions about your health and make sure that you do not have any underlying diseases and that you are not pregnant.
  • The person who performs the piercing must take out the new and sterile gloves from the package in front of your eyes and put them on.
Be sure to choose a place for piercing where the tools used are sterilized by autoclave and using high pressure and temperature. Otherwise, you need to go elsewhere.
  • The sealed nasal piercing needle must be removed from the sterile package in front of you.
  • The jewelry you want must be sterilized by the autoclave method before placing it.
  • Your nose should be thoroughly cleaned with alcohol or other disinfectant before piercing.
  • You should be given clear instructions on how to clean and care for your piercing.

Does nose piercing hurt?

Does nose piercing hurt?

Each person’s pain tolerance threshold is different. In this way, different people’s experience of nose piercing is different. However, it is natural that you will experience some pain during this process. At first, the piercing site may be sensitive and swollen, bleed or bruise. The good news is that the pain usually goes away within a day or two. On the other hand, during 3 to 4 weeks, the holes created on the bridge of the nose are completely healed. The septum healing process is a bit slower and takes about 3 to 4 months.

What are the possible side effects of nose piercing?

What are the possible side effects of nose piercing?
Making cuts and holes in any part of the body can lead to various complications./ Photo by: GoodLifeStudio

Your nose is right in the middle of an area known as the “facial danger triangle.” This triangle starts from the middle of the forehead, includes the area between the eyebrows and the upper lip, and continues to the two corners of the lips. The blood vessels and nerves of this area are connected to your sinus cavity. Therefore, any action you do in this section can be associated with a serious infection if it is not done properly and accurately. According to what we said, the possible side effects of nose piercing are as follows:

infection

Germs and bacteria inside your nose can cause an infection. In such situations, viruses such as HIV, hepatitis B or C, and tetanus may enter your bloodstream through instruments that have not been properly sterilized.

Bleeding

The surface of the skin and all the organs of the body are covered with an intricate network of blood vessels. Therefore, it is natural that any wound or puncture will cause bleeding. Meanwhile, septum piercing is associated with more bleeding and can cause a hematoma. Hematoma is a complication caused by damage to one of the large blood vessels and causes blood to collect outside the vessel. This condition is accompanied by bruising, swelling and sometimes infection.

Allergic reaction

Allergic reactions are one of the most common side effects of nose piercing. That is, your skin may be sensitive to the metal compounds in the jewelry. In this case, it is necessary to change the annoying accessory and use gold or silver jewelry.

nerve damage

In addition to blood vessels, the entire body is surrounded by an extensive network of nerves. Therefore, naturally, piercing a part of it can disrupt the functioning of the nervous system and damage it. These injuries are usually accompanied by numbness or pain.

Coloid formation

Sometimes, a keloid tissue may form at the site of a wound or puncture on the body. Colloidal tissue is a raised fleshy mass that is formed at the wound site. In some cases, this extra flesh is much larger and more pronounced than the original scar. This complication is caused by the excessive production of collagen in the damaged area. It is good to know that not all people’s bodies produce extra meat when they are cut and in the process of healing.

What are the cares after nose piercing?

Care after nose piercing

  • Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before touching the piercing jewelry or the nose itself.
  • Gently clean the wound two or three times a day using a piece of sterile gauze soaked in salt water solution and then dry it with a clean and new tissue.
  • At the doctor’s discretion, you can immerse your nose in a salt-water solution two or three times a day.
  • Avoid swimming in the pool, sea, river and jacuzzi before the wound is completely healed.
  • Clean the wound regularly with antibacterial ointment.
  • Avoid moving or playing with your nose jewelry until your scar is completely healed.
  • We suggest that you use nail ornaments at the beginning and until the wound is completely healed. Wearing ring jewelry during the healing period may change the appearance of the piercing and make it curved.
  • To avoid possible cartilage damage, do not under any circumstances put pressure on the nose. For this purpose, it is necessary to put your head on the pillow while sleeping so that there is no pressure on your wound.
  • Your nose is the place where all kinds of microbes and bacteria live and grow. Therefore, it is necessary to take any warning signs seriously and see a doctor if you see signs of inflammation or infection.
  • During the recovery period, avoid makeup and use any creams and cosmetic products on the wound site. Otherwise, the piercing may become infected.
  • Sleep on clean sheets.
  • Instead of bathing in a tub and soaking in water, you need to take a shower.
  • Do not leave the piercing hole empty for a long time after healing and continuously use special jewelry. Otherwise, the hole created on your nose with so much effort and care may simply be closed.

Warning signs

The occurrence of any of the following symptoms can be a sign of infection. Therefore, if you see them, be sure to contact your doctor or go to medical centers:

  • Ague
  • nausea
  • Swelling, inflammation, or pain in the wound area
  • Yellow or green fluid oozing from the puncture site

Who are prohibited from doing nose piercing?

Pregnant women, children and adolescents under legal age and people with underlying diseases are usually prohibited from doing nose piercing.

In most modern societies, minors and those who do not yet have a proper idea of their body and may later regret doing so are prohibited from piercing. These people usually cannot take care of nose piercing properly. In this case, the possibility of infection and subsequent problems increases. Other contraindications for nose piercing include:

  • People with very sensitive and irritable skin.
  • Those whose skin is inflamed or allergic, or who have moles, bruises, and unusual bumps on their noses.
  • Those who are allergic to metals such as nickel.
  • People who have diseases such as diabetes, hemophilia, autoimmune disorders or heart diseases.
  • People who do certain jobs and any type of piercing, especially piercing parts of the face and using ornaments in this part of the body, are prohibited for them.

What centers should we go to for nose piercing in Iran?

What centers should we go to for nose piercing in Iran?
In Iran, just like in any other part of the world, to get a nose piercing, you should go to reputable centers and clinics or well-known hair salons that strictly follow the hygiene rules./ Photo by: Ninoon

If you have made your decision and are going to experience nose piercing, you must pay attention to some points before doing this. For nose piercing, we suggest you go to reputable clinics, hair salons, and centers that strictly follow the hygiene rules. In addition, make sure of the ability and skill of the piercing operator. The place you choose should be equipped with an autoclave. We already told you that this device is a standard device that uses high temperature, pressure and water vapor to completely sterilize the equipment and ornaments required for piercing. If after choosing the salon or clinic you want, you see any pollution, neglect or inexperience, or if you notice that they do not follow the hygiene tips carefully, leave that place as soon as possible and choose a more suitable and safer option.
